Do you kombucha?

Unfortunately, my little man is still ill, and my house is probably crawling with sick kid germs. As a result, there has been a lot of orange juice guzzling, green consuming and probiotic taking in this household (my non-vegan hubby and son like dairy products fortified with good bacteria, while I take a dairy-free supplement by Country Life).

Speaking of probiotics, my favorite way to get them is in kombucha. I haven't made it myself, yet, but I really like to drink a flavored G.T.'s Kombucha (the bottle says it has 1 billion organisms of lactobacillus bacterium and s. boulardii) once and a while. I usually buy Strawberry Serenity, but I haven't found a flavor I didn't like. You can also get it without any added fruit puree/juice.

According to my bottle of deliciousness, "Kombucha (pronounced kom-BOO-cha) is a handmade Chinese tea that is delicately cultured for 30 days. During this time, essential nutrients form like: Active Enzymes, Viable Probiotics, Amino Acids, Antioxidants and Polyphenols. All of these combine to create an elixir that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality."

It claims to support digestion, metabolism, immune system (what I really need right now, which is why I popped one open today), appetite control, weight control, liver function, body alkalinity, anti-aging, cell integrity and healthy skin and hair; sounds like a miracle drink.

Rawbin, this is the fermented beverage I've been telling you about. I buy mine at Whole Foods, and although it contains a trace amount of alcohol (less than 0.5%), you can buy it right out of the refrigerated section. You probably won't even notice it's slight alcohol content, unless you are like me and don't drink; I find it sometimes gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

This morning, I added about a cup of it to my green smoothie for an extra immunity boast. I also used kale, my usual probiotic, wheat grass, spirulina, cilantro, cocoa powder, maca (I really needed the energy after the last few nights), lucuma, coconut butter, sea salt, cinnamon, cayenne pepper (I love it when it's cold), banana and strawberries. Yummy!

Well, my son must be feeling a little better, since he is rocking out to Guitar Hero. Take it easy little man; don't overdo it.

i love the kombucha, but it's a little pricey! i have been getting a few lately though since they are on sale at the co-op.

interesting collection of books in the background, so similar to my shelf! have you read any of natalia rose's books? they are awesome!

I agree that kombucha can be pricey. That's why I find it to be a special treat, which I hope to learn to make in the future.

About the books, they just ended up in the background, when I was trying to add some interest to the shot. Who wants to see just a plain bottle of kombucha? :-)

I love Natalia Rose; probably because she recommends eating chocolate. I don't own any of her books, yet, but I have flipped through them. I've also visited her website on occasion (I enjoy reading her blog).

I want to get a copy of her most recent book. Maybe I'll get one for Christmas. Hint, hint, hubby.

i love kombucha too but OY the price. last time it was on sale we got like 30!

your raw book shelf looks a lot like mine. except i don't have the juliano or the raw food gourmet.

how did you like those?

I did the same thing for a picture on my blog, but couldn't get it to upload so didn't end up using it. But that is why yours really stood out to me, I was trying to find a more interesting shot of a butternut squash!

Anyway, you should get a Natalia Rose book, that is where I started with this whole idea of raw last January. I love her approach because it is all about transitioning gradually and not having labels as I mentioned earlier...and of course the dark chocolate!! But also, her recipes are simple and don't require a lot of equipment other than a juicer and a mandoline. (I have been more into blended smoothies lately though, what is your preference?) And she has the most amazing easy raw chocolate ice cream recipe!

What did you think of the Thrive diet? I liked the book but haven't tried many of the recipes yet.

Check out my "Just 'rawify' it" post, where I answered some of your comments :-)

Wonderful post! Yes, kombucha is pricey, but it is actually very inexpensive to make at home!

I've heard it is inexpensive to make at home. I plan on trying it sometime. But lately, my lazy side has somehow found the funds to buy it by the bottle.

Any tips for making it in the future?

I love Kombucha! I just ordered a Kombucha brewing kit from getkombucha.com. I am so excited!

Now that's what I need to do. I'm guilty of picking up some more of the strawberry and the ginger flavored pre-made kind :-(
